ACHTUNG BITTE!!!!!! Bug Spray/Repelant would be a great thing to bring. I just spent 3 days in the field(different training area) doing land navigation and ended up finding 34 ticks on me. Mosquitos were also a very big problem. I encourage everyone to bring something/treat their gear with something to mitigate these problems!

100% Deet spray is great for discouraging ticks. Spray it on key parts of your gear and at openings in your uniform, i.e. neck, wrists, waistband, cuffs, boot laces, etc..... It's available at Wal-Mart in the sporting goods section, camping. In this same zone you'll also find a number of spray repellants. Most of them just contain Deet, which we've already covered. So if you want a spray, read the label for the active ingredient and select the one that is NOT DEET.... Another item in this same general area is a battery powered glo-stick. They come in red and green and have a lanyard attached. They run about $3.00 with tax.
A good home remedy for mosquitoes and gnats is vanilla extract. Put some into a spray bottle, spritz it on, and that's all there is. You might smell like a cookie for awhile, but those little buggers don't like it very much. If you don't have a sprayer then just use a tissue or paper towel to daub it on yourself. Same results either way... ;D ;D

If you wish to pre-treat your clothes, get Permethrin from Cabela's. Good stuff as well.

ok old tricks and they work. For ticks about a week or 2 before you will be in the area, take a garlic pill a day. it won't stop all of them but out of say 8 ticks you will maybe have 1-2. Also a dryer sheet in your blouse or cargo pocket will keep the flying bloodsuckers away.
