The Fort Riley branch of the USO is currently taking donations for their Single Soldier Homecoming Kits again this year. Below is an explanation from the USO.
"USO Fort Riley is working to help welcome our troops home from their deployments.
With input from the units, we have determined that one of our top priorities is to support
the single soldiers by helping decorate their barracks rooms. While married soldiers have
spouses providing those soldiers what they need when they come home, single soldiers
come home to an empty barracks room. For so many of them, the first things they want to
do are take a nice shower and relax; the last thing they want to do is go shopping for the
items they need to make that happen.
We are seeking your support with making this homecoming a memorable one for these
soldiers. The USO plans on making homecoming kits for all returning single soldiers that
contain some basic items – travel-sized shampoo, travel-sized bar of soap, toothbrush,
travel-size toothpaste, a wash cloth, non-perishable snacks, a bottle of water and a thank
you note from a patriotic American. There are a large number of single soldiers set to
return in 2011, so any assistance you may be able to provide – whether it be an in-kind
donation, financial contribution, thank you note, or helping spread the word on this
program – would be greatly appreciated.
The USO is a non-profit organization; we operate solely on the donations from generous
businesses and from private citizens who make monetary contributions. We provide
activities such as free dinners the day before pay day, care packages to the troops and in
2010 we opened a center to serve as a “home away from home” for our soldiers and
their families."
Here is a list of suggested items to bring for donation:
• Travel-sized shampoo
• Travel-sized bar of soap
• Toothbrush
• Travel-sized toothpaste
• Non-perishable, individually wrapped snacks
• Wash cloth
• Hand written Thank you note from individuals
Their biggest needs this year are wash cloths and non-perishable snacks, along with thank you notes.
Let’s show our support for our returning troops and provide the necessary items for the USO kits for the soldiers.
There will be a drop off location at the check in area during Operation Phoenix III.
Thanks in advance for your support.
